The Great North Wood gave the Norwood area its name. The vast, natural oak forest covered four miles of South London to the outskirts of Croydon. Wealthy Victorians would travel from the city to holiday in Norwood, considered one of the healthiest parts of London for its clean air straight from the South Coast.
